Choosing a cover feels complicated until you ask the right questions in the right order. Answer these five and your choice will usually be obvious. This is the closing piece of our binding covers guide.
Question 1: How many pages?
Page count decides spine size, and spine size decides whether the book looks right. Count your sheets (remember double-sided pages count as one sheet) and check a spine capacity guide. If you are between sizes, choose the size that fits snugly rather than loosely.
Question 2: Who will hold it?
A colleague, a client and a board member each expect a different level of finish. Internal use points to soft covers. Client-facing documents point to Flex or custom. Executive and board documents point to hard covers.

Question 3: How long should it last?
A one-week handout and a ten-year archive are different jobs. Longer lifespans justify tougher materials and rigid construction. See the comparison in what binding covers are made from.
Question 4: Will pages change?
If the answer is yes, thermal binding is probably not your method. Read thermal vs. comb vs. coil covers to compare. If the content is final, thermal gives the cleanest result.
Question 5: What is the budget per book?
Work out the cost per finished book, including any waste, and choose the highest tier that fits. Our budget guide for schools and students shows how.
