Legal documents are judged on whether they hold up, not on how they look at first glance. So we start with what the document has to survive, then match the cover. This guide supports our full binding covers guide.

Always confirm any court, jurisdiction or client formatting requirements before you bind. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

Requirement 1: Handling by many hands

Briefs and contracts are passed around, annotated and carried to court. Look for a sturdy front and back, such as a Hard cover for key filings or a Flex cover for working copies.

Requirement 2: Length

A deposition or closing set can run long. Match the spine to the page count with a spine capacity guide so the stack sits snug. A wrongly sized spine is the most common cause of loose pages.

Requirement 3: Page integrity

With thermal binding, page edges are bonded into the spine. Removing or swapping pages is harder to do cleanly than with a removable fastener, which makes tampering easier to notice. It is not a legal guarantee of authenticity, but it is a sensible layer of secure document binding.

Requirement 4: Filing and storage

Documents live on shelves, so a labelled spine matters. A solid-colour cover with a title label makes a binder easy to find months later. Learn more in our anatomy of a binding cover guide.

Bringing binding in house

Law firms that bind often save time by doing it on site. A desktop thermal binder pairs with the covers above, and the Executive Success Set (Unibind 60, clear and hard covers, and lay-flat paper) is a convenient starting bundle. Compare this with the clear and solid options in clear vs. solid covers.
