The terms get mixed up constantly, even by people who buy them every week. Here are the five most common myths, answered plainly. For the full topic map, see our binding covers guide.

Myth 1: "They are the same thing with different names"

Reality: A binding cover is part of the binding. It carries the spine (often with adhesive) and holds the pages permanently. A presentation cover or report cover usually frames pages that are fastened by some other means, such as a slide-grip spine, a prong fastener or a staple.

Myth 2: "Presentation covers are the cheaper way to get the same result"

Reality: Presentation covers have a lower entry price and no machine requirement, but the pages are only as secure as the fastener. For documents that will be handled, mailed or reviewed by a client, the extra step of a true bound spine often pays for itself.

Myth 3: "Binding covers are only for thick books"

Reality: Spine sizes run from slim reports up to thick manuscripts. A 20-page proposal in a properly sized cover looks sharper than the same pages in a flimsy folder.

Myth 4: "A bound document cannot look as polished as a presentation folder"

Reality: It is usually the other way round. A bound cover has a continuous spine and tight page edges, which is why hard covers and Flex covers appear in board packs and client deliverables.

Myth 5: "You need to pick one"

Reality: Many teams use both. Use presentation covers for quick internal handouts, and binding covers for anything that represents your company. Our guide to binding covers for professional presentations shows how teams split the two.
